We have a moral responsibility to look after the animals on our farm.
This responsibility extends beyond what the authorities insist on and is encompassed in the 5 domains of animal welfare which cover:

MENTAL STATE

We understand that for every physical aspect of an animals life, there may be an accompanying emotion or subjective experience that may also affect it`s welfare.

As much as we can we allow our animals to live as nature intended – to explain it simply we want our pigs to enjoy the joy of being a pig and our goats to experience the joy of being a goat.

Some farmers look at the variety of animals and wonder why we keep so many when we could have just one species and be more efficient. I think these people have lost sight of the joy and colour of farming. Just the like the daily changes of nature the variety of characters and personalities f the animal add colour and enjoyment to life on the farm. Monospecies would be a very monotone life indeed.

Chickens

CURLY FLATS’s toughest residents who often freely walk around the ranch to hang out in the sun, eat small insects in the fields, and clean the pigs after plowing. Naughty Simon and Vladimir Putin are the boss Roosters who protect their girls and sometimes fight with Mr Pajama.

Pigs

“I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.” – Winston Churchil

High IQ with adorable special charm. CURLY FLATS KUROBUTA is a black pig or simply “Kurobuta” in Japanese or Berkshire pig.

Sheep

Fluffy Fluffy Lawnmowers. Sheep are a whimsical and mysterious group. In spite of the extremely cold winter we stroll around wrapped in thick wool.

Goats

These goats came to us a few months after they were born. We took good care of them, feeding them milk and taking them for daily walks in our light truck.

Cats

Our first cat was a wild orange stray we named Mr. Curly.
It took a while to get him to accept food and kindness from the Humans.

Rabbits

A family moved from Hidaka to Sapporo and had some pet rabbits that needed a home.

Bees

These are the honeybees that live in a hive placed quietly in a corner of the farm. When the weather is warm, they fly around the fields and mountains to collect honey with a rich aroma.

Dogs

Sushi and Rufus are busy working as guard dogs at night and farm dogs in the day.  After a nightly of local Vension they come inside and fall contentedly asleep on their favourite sofa to dream of another day running freely on the farm.
